THE 14th ANNUAL
CENTRAL COAST DOUBLE
&
THE 6th ANNUAL
CENTRAL COAST CHALLENGE
Saturday, May 10, 2008
Course Description
The 14th
annual CCD begins and ends at City Park in Paso Robles, CA. The initial
portion of the route takes you over the Santa Lucia Range to Pacific Coast
Highway (PCH) via Adelaida, York Mtn. and Santa Rosa Creek Road. Hope you've
lubed your 39x26. Once on PCH you'll travel through the beautiful hamlets of
Cambria, San Simeon, Ragged Point and Gorda as you prep for the next assault
of the Santa Lucia's. Nacimiento/Ferguson Road takes you over the ridge,
parallel to Mill Creek and the Nacimiento River, to within 1.5 miles of your
well-deserved lunch at the De Anza Gym on Fort Hunter Liggett. After lunch
you get to experience the best of the Salinas and Lockwood Valley's as you
ride through Quinado, Espinosa, and Tule canyons on your relentless trek
toward the two lakes of Nacimiento and San Antonio. After the rest stop at
the Bradley school, enjoy the latter portions of the route as you gently
climb through Hare Canyon, rocket down Indian Valley Road, and roll into the
finish along River Road. This ride consist of 13,800 feet of climbing over
the 209.5-mile route, making it one of the most difficult doubles on The
Triple Crown schedule. The CCD will be included in the Triple Crown "Stage
Race" for 2008.

The Central
Coast Challenge (CCC) will be the same route to lunch as the double with 170
miles and more than 10,500ft of climbing. After lunch the CCC will head
straight to the Bradley rest stop, excluding the Lockwood loop and Interlake
loop. There will be a 60 rider limit on the Central Coast Challenge.
Tour Support
There
will be six rest stops, a water stop (more if the day is above normal
temperature for this time of year), plus a full lunch stop. (See
Elevation Chart) There will be an
after ride meal. Among the sag support and rest stop personnel that will be
provided will include the Cyclonauts Mountain & Road Bicycle Club of Paso
Robles. Communications around the course will be provided by HAM radio
operators. Ride patches will be given to all riders upon check-in at the
completion of the ride.
There will be two light
drop off points. The first drop off point will be Rest Stop 4 (150
miles), and the second is Rest Stop 5 (179 miles).
Ride Difficulty
This is one
of the more difficult double centuries in the California Triple Crown
Series. The Central Coast Double should not be your first attempt at riding
200+ miles, due to the nature and extent of the climbs, which become more
difficult if it is a very hot day. In contrast if you have completed events
such as Climb to Kaiser, Terrible Two, Heartbreak, Devil Mountain or
the Markleeville Death Ride (all passes) then this ride can be completed
well within the time limit.
Time Limit
The course
will officially close at midnight, a cutoff time will be imposed at the
Bradley rest stop (Rest stop 5) which is at the 179-mile point, 30 miles
from the finish. All riders will be required to have left this rest stop by
9:45 P.M. or you will be sagged in at that time.
After The Ride
Massage will
be available after the ride. Dee Besse'e will provide after ride
massages for a fee.
There will be an after ride dinner
provided by Frank Milazzo.
